Hala Swearingen – Assistant Professor…
Hala (Wittwer) Swearingen has worked as an illustrator since 1996. She began her career by earning a BFA in Illustration at Brigham Young University and working in-house for a children’s educational software company. In 2000, she signed with an artist representative in New York City and transitioned into full-time freelance work. Some of her clients include Bath and Body Works, Gamewright Inc., HarperCollins, Hyperion, Kimberly-Clark Corporation, Penguin/Putnam, Random House, Scholastic, Simon & Schuster, Somerset House, and Tor Books. She creates her illustrations with a variety of media including oil, acrylic, watercolor, and pen & ink. Her artwork has received recognition in national and international illustration competitions including: Society of Illustrators New York, Society of Illustrators Los Angeles, Communication Arts, and Spectrum. In 2013, her work was awarded a Bronze Medal from Society of Illustrators in Los Angeles.
Swearingen began working with students at Brigham Young University in 2005 and has taught courses such as drawing, linear perspective, design, color, figure drawing, and illustration. She earned her MFA at the Art Institute of Boston in 2009 and became part of the California State University, Fullerton illustration faculty that same year. As a teacher she emphasizes mastery in drawing, painting, design, and clear visual communication.
